What is soapbox101 ?

soapbox101 is a next generation community. Not like others before it, though. The enormous difference here is that the platform is not restricted to one area – it can cover literally anything. Sure, it was written by a technical professional, but that doesn’t mean that’s where the conversations start and stop. Quite the opposite. soapbox101 was designed to bring people together with a view of creating something unique – a place where everyone can discuss the topics that matter to them without feeling as though they really shouldn’t be asking, or treated in a condescending manner.

The platform is a new horizon in the sense that it is 100%+ fully designed for the mobile experience, has virtually real-time notifications, and so much more to offer. In fact (being brutally honest), it’s a distinct attempt at trying to establish a platform that everyone can use without the fear of repercussion – in other words, it’s a place where all voices are heard, and everyone is treated as an equal. Want to discuss development, technology, human resources, recruitment, suppliers, legal and compliance, or anything else you can think of ? Do it here. The absolute focus of this platform is to recreate communities how they should be

It’s a level playing field here. Nobody has the right to demean another. We’re all here to learn.

How do I join ?

We’ve dramatically simplified the registration process for soapbox101, as we want to to get started right away. No complex sign up forms, no requests for information we don’t need (in fact, we only ask for a “screen name”, the email address (essential for notifications), and the password). There’s no attribution either, so if you don’t want to use your real name, you don’t have to !

Ready ? Sign up for your account by first clicking here, then click the “Sign Up” link shown below

Then, fill out the fields as shown below (don’t forget to accept the terms of usage, privacy policy, and cookie policy)

You’ll then be sent an activation email, which you need to approve before you can login and being posting.

How do I like a post ?

You can’t. This isn’t Facebook, but can you can upvote for content that you think is useful. In a similar sense, there is no ability to downvote either. If you don’t like the content, simply move on.

Can I login using my social media account ?

Absolutely. However, Facebook will not be supported. I strongly dislike their attitude towards security and privacy, and also dislike their “ethic” of allowing virtually the entire planet access to your data without permissions. See this link for more detail

Is my personal information safe here ?

Absolutely. We don’t even ask you for your name when you sign up, and the email address you decide to use is entirely up to you. We do not store any information about members on this, or the discussion site. Similarly, we’ll NEVER bombard you with unwanted ads, spy on your browsing history, send you unsolicited email when we didn’t request consent beforehand, or permit access to / sell your data to anybody. If you want to sign up using a pseudonym, then that’s absolutely fine with us.

How secure is this site ?

Good question. First, let’s remember that security isn’t a product. It’s a framework – a selection of best practices, common accepted industry standards, hardening, and a variety of other “hidden” techniques and technologies that form the basis of the overarching security model that soapbox101 deploys.

We are committed to the security of personal data. We take appropriate security measures to limit abuse of and unauthorised access to personal data. This ensures that only the necessary persons have access to your data, that access to the data is protected, and that our security measures are regularly reviewed.

The security measures we use consist of:

  • Username and Password
  • DNSSEC
  • TLS / SSL
  • DKIM, SPF en DMARC
  • Physical security measures of systems which contain personal data.
  • Security software
Is there a rating or ranking system in place ?

Yes, there is. Should users have the capability to downvote ? Personally, I do not want this as I think if you don’t agree with something, or dislike the content, you simply “don’t vote” rather than express your disapproval for everyone else to see. Upvoting shows support, so, if you have nothing to say, then scroll on and if you have a contribution, constructive criticism or alternative view, post a useful comment and keep the conversation going.

We have designed the platform for engagement. We typically use the voting facility for other purposes, such as polling / taking opinions about a specific topic etc., and decided to adopt this kind of functionality to act as a ranking and reputation system. In our view, this encourages discussion and viewpoints.

Can I automatically follow discussions I reply to ?

You certainly can. Follow these steps

On the top right side of the screen, you’ll see your user avatar. Click this once, then select “Settings” from the resultant drop down menu

Select the “Automatically follow discussions that I reply to”. Note, that for GDPR compliance, this setting is disabled by default. Setting this to on signifies your acceptance of being notified via email once a topic has been updated.

Does soapbox101 support Two Factor (2FA) ?

Yes, we do. Follow the below steps to enable this

Within your account, click your avatar on the right hand side, and choose “Settings”

Now select “Two Factor” as shown below

From the resulting window, activate Two Factor as shown below

Once enabled, scan the QR code, or enter it manually from the resulting screen – note, please don’t scan this one, as it won’t work 🙂

Once you’ve scanned the QR code, or entered it manually, you’ll need to confirm the sequence by entering the 6 digit code that appears on your device

Provided the codes match, the sequence will complete, and you’ll be given 3 recovery codes in case you should ever lose your device

Record these in a safe place – you may need them later. Remember, if you lose your device, you’ll also lose access to the discussion portal for security reasons. You will also be sent an email to inform you that 2FA is active on your account, but for security reasons, these codes will not be included. When you login next, you’ll see an additional prompt for the 2FA one time pass code. Enter the one shown on your device to complete the login sequence.
